Common Reasons Behind Roofing Service Calls

A lot of homeowners make the mistake of not addressing roofing issues until the damage has already spread to other parts of their home. Unfortunately, some roofing problems are more serious than they may at first seem. Below the roofing and radon testing experts at Optima Home Inspections list the most common reasons behind roofing service calls.

Common Reasons Behind Roofing Service Calls

Storm Damage

Even the most durable roof can suffer damage after a serious storm. That’s why we often receive calls from customers after an extreme weather event. Unfortunately, some homeowners wait up to a week after the storm has passed to call us. By then, what was relatively minor roof damage has often worsened to the point that it affects their home’s interior as well.

Clogged or Leaky Gutters

Cleaning your gutters is a tedious but necessary chore. Your gutters divert rainwater away from your roof, protecting it from moisture damage. If your gutters are clogged or have holes in them, water can overflow and spill onto your roof, not to mention other parts of your exterior.

Damaged Flashing

Contractors install strips of metal called flashing on your roof to cover roof joints and gaps where two surfaces meet. As such, it’s one of the roof’s most vulnerable points, and a common place for leaks to develop.

Termite Infestations

In addition to being affected by moisture, any wooden structure is vulnerable to termites. These pests prefer a damp environment, but it isn’t a requirement for them to thrive. So long as they can manage to find a way into your home, an infestation can develop.

Keep in mind that different species of termites pose varying levels of risk. Drywood termites, a relatively common species, can make nests in any wooden structure, including your roof deck. However, it’s the Formosan termite, or super termite, you should be wary of, as they can cause more damage than native species of termites.

You don’t need to worry too much, though, since termite damage can be easily fixed as long as you get rid of the infestation early on. That’s why you should routinely schedule termite inspections. It’s also essential to make sure the contractor doing the inspection has the right qualifications.
